AMD Remediation Efforts in Turtle Creek Watershed

Turtle Creek Watershed Association

The Turtle Creek watershed comprises approximately 315 miles of streams contained in just over 147 square miles of drainage area in Western Westmoreland and Eastern Allegheny counties. The main creek starts near Delmont, in western Westmoreland County, and flows into the Monongahela River in North Versailles Township, Allegheny County, near US Steel.

Turtle Creek historically has been plagued with abandoned mine drainage (AMD) and industrial discharges along the creek mainstem, as well as from its tributaries. One of the goals of cleanup efforts by the Turtle Creek Watershed Association and Murrysville Area Watershed Association is restoration of the Turtle Creek watershed for recreational purposes.

Melissa Church, MAWA Executive Director, along with Ben Hedin, Associate Director of the TCWA, will discuss the current and planned efforts of these two organizations for AMD remediation and stream cleanup in this local watershed.

One major project is a multi-million-dollar and multi-year effort to clean up a significant mine discharge (almost 9,000,000 gallons per day) into Brush Creek, a major Turtle Creek tributary.
