GLITCH affects Stream Clean-up Contest – submission deadline extended (5-23-2020)

A missing letter in the email contact for the recent Stream Clean-up Contest has resulted in a GLITCH: no entries were received by the cut-off date (May 17, 2020). However, several members have contacted us with questions. “What about my entry?”. To be fair, we’ve decided to extend the submission deadline to May 30, 2020. […]

Jamie Schroder explores Linden Creek (5-22-2020)

Board member and Membership Chair Jamie Schroder has found a gem of a stream in North Strabane, about a 40 minute drive south from downtown Pittsburgh. Cows, golf, target practice, deep holes in the creek with trout…who could ask for more. Read all about her adventures by Clicking Here.

Stream Clean-up Contest Update (5-22-2020)

Conservation Chair Bryan Mathie challenged members of PWWTU to get out and clean up part of a stream. Prizes were offered for the largest collection of trash. Bryan and his family even provided an example of how to do it. Unfortunately, no other chapter member entered the contest. If you thought about doing a stream […]

The secret life of the mayfly (5-22-2020)

George Altemus alerts us to a video that is available via the Midcurrent Fly Fishing site. George says: “This is the best underwater photography I’ve ever seen showing the habitat of the four types of mayfly nymphs: the clingers, crawlers, burrowers, & swimmers.” The video was shot in a very healthy stream in the mountains […]

“The complete fisherman” (posted May 14, 2020)

Patagonia presents a fabulous film about fishing in the Alps: “Il Pescatore Completo” (The Complete Fisherman). It’s a Tenkara approach to high mountain streams. Alberto Pugno, a fisherman in the Italian Alps, is the last great master of an ancient style of fly fishing remarkable for its pure simplicity and grace. Click here to go […]

Summary of Board phone conference May 7, 2020 (posted May 8, 2020)

Your Board adopted two new policies (see nearby). One sets the terms of reimbursement for travel related to PWWTU, the other deals with the important topic of Youth Protection. The latter policy requires background checks and a viewing of the Youth Protection Policy of National TU in order for any PWWTU member to have contact […]

Christian Shane’s Steelhead Journey (posted May 8, 2020)

Steelhead season is over this year, but one can always dream about future adventures. Christian Shane is a poet as well as a fine fisherman. His description of a very cold winter’s day spent in search of the wiley steelhead is a fine musing about how fishing puts us in touch with nature as well […]

A short history of PWWTU’s involvement with the annual Allegheny Sportsman and Travel show (posted 5-4-2020)

Ron Milavec has provided a nice history of our involvement in the annual Allegheny Sportsmans’ show. Our booth at the show allows us to contact the general public about our various programs and provide education in the form of fly tying demos and lectures. The report is particularly poignant because it has pictures of Rich […]

Bob Heil, Jr shares his secret recipe for the ICE DUB MINNOW (5-1-2020)

Bob Heil is an accomplished fisherman and tyer who is also on the PWWTU Board. A little arm twisting has got him to write down the recipe for one of his go-to flies, the Ice Dub Minnow. This is a take-off of Ed Shenk’s famous minnow pattern and has been a winner for Bob against […]

Chris Wood, President and CEO of Trout Unlimited, on the status of TU (posted May 1, 2020)

You may have also received a note in the mail from Chris Wood, President and CEO of the national TU organization. If you’re like me, you may have sent it to the circular file without opening it. Something said “open this one”, and I’m glad I did because Chris has nicely addressed the impact of […]

All large group events such as Chapter Meetings have been cancelled or postponed.  However,  virtual reality is taking over during this time of Corona, and our Women’s Initiative is a good example:  Fly Tying demo done remotely.  All (including guys!) are welcome to tune in. See the handout with the event listed below for instructions.

Expand your Horizons

Think outside the box of PWWTU. There are 400 plus Chapters of Trout Unlimited in the country.  We have a ton of members (over 1,000) but few cold-water streams supporting trout. Why not wind up the computer (or pick up the phone) and contact a TU chapter from the surrounding area to see what they’re up to and how you might be able to help. Click Here .SW PA TU Chapters for a spreadsheet of likely SW and NW PA Chapters, their websites, and a contact. What’s to lose?  You might even get introduced to a stream full of brookies that you didn’t know about.

Women and Diversity

Calling all Ladies!!!

We have a group just for you!!!

“Women’s Outreach” for PWWTU. This new group was created so that we, as a local organization, can better listen to and serve the needs of female anglers.

Our aim is to partner with female anglers who: want to fish together, learn more about the sport, support each other’s fishing growth and have fun! As women – we have the ability to become some of the best anglers – and our chapter wants to support that growth!

If this group interests you or you have any questions – please contact Jodie Minor or Nora Cline at [email protected]
